Never Stops Climbing: 86-Year-Old Sherpa Became Mount Everest's Best Mountain Guide, Proving Age is Just a Number

Tenzing is 86 years old but he could still climb to the peak of Mount Everest and carry loads up to 330 pounds.

“It feels so great to be 86 but strong and bursting with energy.”

He shared his key to remain young, strong and painless.

Tenzing has been climbing Mount Everest since the young age of 13. At age 49, he climbed Mount Everest more than 23 times. Every year, he never fails to lead hundreds of foreigners to reach the summit successfully and returning them back to ground safely.

“It’s a very special feeling when you stand on the peak of Mount Everest, that’s why I never stopped climbing it. Looking at my clients’ faces when they stand on the peak is the part where I love my job the most.”

Daily Life Of A Sherpa

A Sherpa’s job is dangerous and not easy. They are not only mountain guides who secure ropes and ladders at dangerously high altitudes for clients before every expedition. They are also porters who carry clients’ heavy loads on their backs for every climb. During the climb, Sherpas can fall into crevasses and face violent storms.

In 2014, a massive avalanche killed many Sherpas. Most of them were Tenzing’s family except for his granddaughter, Lhamo. She was the only survivor of the incident. So, he made a promise to his family members who were gone.

“I will protect her till my last breath no matter what.”

But one day, Lhamo was diagnosed with blood cancer and Tenzing needed a huge amount of money to pay for her hospital bill. To save his only family left, he worked hard even after his age of retirement. He continued climbing right after every expedition without having a break.

As he kept working, he started feeling excruciating pain on his lower back and each step he took was painful enough for him to stop. Tenzing tried everything from doing stretches and massages to taking cheap medications to treat his pain. Nothing worked. Tenzing could only bear the pain while he continued working.

The Never-Ending Snow

One day, Tenzing guided a group of foreign climbers as usual. He felt the sharp pain on his back again and this time, he collapsed and blacked out. Foreign climbers were stuck with him for hours under the freezing snow. It was almost dusk when another Sherpa found them while he was preparing for next expedition.

When Tenzing woke up, he was shocked to find himself at a hospital. His doctor told him he could not climb anymore and that he was lucky to have survived the incident.

Tenzing was depressed that he almost endangered his clients’ lives and that he could not continue his job to save his granddaughter.

A Visit For His Legs

As he was about to accept his reality, another doctor visited. He is Dr. Joyner, a podiatrist with 50 years of experience. Tenzing was confused why his back pain had something to do with his legs.

This was Dr. Joyner’s explanation:

“The reason why many people are having back problems now is because they have been ignoring the pain of their body foundation. The real culprit is your feet.

Your feet are the foundation of your body. It supports your entire weight when you walk, run, climb and doing any other activities.

Now, imagine your feet doing all those activities from birth till now, there are certainly times when your feet have overworked and signaled your body when it’s under a lot of pain and stress and if you choose to ignore any feet or leg pain as you continue to age, the pain from your legs will travel up to your body.

That’s why many of us feel other kinds of pain, from back pain, hip pain, joint pain, neck pain… and If your body can’t handle the pain, you will collapse.”

Dr. Joyner shared his experience of dealing with a lot of clients who also had back problems.

“I used to not have enough time for all my clients. It took me decades of research to finally create a solution to help them. After hundreds of my clients tested it out, almost all of them came back with positive results.

Back To The Summit

Tenzing thought it sounds too good to be true but he tried it so he could save his granddaughter in time.

The first day he tried it, he immediately felt a big reduction in pain.

After 1 week, he could climb at his own pace with more strength.

After 2 weeks, he could carry loads up to 330 pounds without any issue.

Tenzing, at his age of 86, was grateful he could get back to work and to be at the peak again. He has gotten more and more foreign customers to guide.
